Coastal Cowboy: An inspired wedding editorial at Bull Point Nova Scotia

Words can not express the wonderful feeling when an idea comes to fruition. The magic of inspired collaboration never ceases to amaze me. This style shoot was nothing short of magical in terms of creativity and fun.

Laura of One Day Affair, Candice of Candice Ross Photography, and I were at the vendor’s appreciation event at ODA’s lux intimate wedding venue One Day Social Affair in Halifax and started a conversation that brought together a talented group of vendors to produce the following editorial! All in the one of a kind, intimate dreamy venue Bull Point Estate

Inspired Double Exposure by Meghan Weber

The brainstorming began as Candice, and I posed the question to Laura about what she would design at the venue Bull Point with free reign and completely original to what other vendors were doing.  Loving a challenge, she combined the breathtaking views of Nova Scotia’s rocky shoreline and the season’s equestrian aesthetic trend. “Coastal Cowboy” was born.

Candice Recalls “When Laura, Meghan, and I stood around at ODA open house and the conversation happened to work together, the excitement was palpable as we bounced ideas off each other.
After that night it was stuck in my head and the ball was rolling! I got to calling and emailing all the great vendors that I could think of that would love to be a part of what was shaping up into this amazing palette of neutrals and textures reminiscent of the Midwest meets the laid-back coastal vibe that Bull Point has.
Laura handled securing them and reached out to Meaghan and Chris to be our perfect models. After that, it all just fell into place. They were effortless in their chemistry together and it made photographing them so easy.
I’m so happy with the way it all came together even if we had thunder, lightning, and rain!”

The incredible venue Bull Point Estate was such a dreamy location. The fog and rain added to the mood and drama of the shoot. Emphasizing the warm colour tones

Laura Crane “My design mind was racing the moment Meghan & Candice asked me how I would personally design a Wedding at Bull Point Estates that would be different than anything vendors have done so far. I love a challenge. You can’t deny the breathtaking views of the ocean and the Nova Scotian rocky shoreline that surround the property. The ideas came flooding out when dreaming up how we could blend that local landscape with this season's equestrian aesthetic trend. A ‘coastal cowboy’ was born. My task as a wedding designer is to harness all of our collective ideas into a cohesive and practical design that communicates the vision. Starting with a mood board depicting inspirational photos, color swatches, and decor elements. I then come up with a plan of what items we need to source to bring the look to life, and what vendors we can rely on to supply. I absolutely loved how this project evolved as we began to collaborate with the other vendors we brought on board. With One Day Affair, all floral arrangements I built had to be custom to work within our color palette and texture requirements. I even tapped into my own personal decor collection to accent the look, bringing fallen deer antlers for the arbor arrangement and a giant whale bone found washed up on the beach to use as the cake stand. The decor elements needed to feel like they had been sourced while walking the Nova Scotian shoreline to feel authentic. Even on the day of the styled shoot, Meghan had brought with her natural items she had forged like shells, rocks, and moss. It was clear to me this epic team understood the assignment. “

The wonderful rentals were supplied by MacFarlands Events. I couldn’t get over the warmth of these glass goblets. A perfect element to Laura’s colour pallet. The contrast of the warmth and blue tones in the candles. The dishes and sheers.

Lauren of Modern Matrimony designed the beautiful stationery for this style session. I asked her what her process and thoughts were behind her designs and she stated “When it comes to themed stationery suites, the possibilities are truly endless. For this “coastal cowboy” theme, I drew inspiration from the earthy colours of the desert and the design elements of our beautiful Atlantic Canadian coastline. The result was a collection of stationery that merged the two worlds seamlessly. The arches and stacked elements are consistent themes in my design and I love how they came together to create a cohesive and eye-catching suite. The watercolor landscapes and custom sunrise-over-the-ocean logo were the perfect finishing touches.”

Her stunning work speaks for itself. it was so much fun for Candice and me to play with in addition to the bits of coastal nature. The lichen, sea glass, and granite complement the coastal theme.

Some low-fi 35mm magic to add to the fun. This Lomokino hand-crank video camera was so much fun to play with. This is a gem of a camera and I was thrilled with the outcome. The dreamy vintage vibes of this charming little video added a bit of edge to the shoot. In an editorial setting, there is room for experimentation and play. I am looking forward to using this little camera in other work as well!

In terms of the attire, the dress was a very “Daisy Jones and the Six” inspired feel. The boutonniere pocket square trend is such a great touch and idea. So nice not to deal with the awkward pins of the traditional style. The bride’s headpiece from Miss Foxine Couture,

Savannah from Kali Cakes describes her process and inspiration, “In our editorial, we unveiled a 2-tier vanilla sponge cake filled and finished with a vanilla American buttercream. The 6-inch bottom tier was designed to replicate the rugged texture of concrete. Using parchment paper to manipulate the buttercream as it set and neutral shades of luster dust for subtle added colour, earthy tones, and rugged edges were created, evoking the rustic essence of the cowboy lifestyle. As the eye ascends, it encounters an enchanting ivory 4-inch top tier adorned with edible rice paper sails and gold accents. Delicately crafted to mimic the graceful movement of ocean waves, these sails transport the viewer to the tranquil shores of a coastal paradise. The intricate detailing and subtle hues of the waves add a touch of ethereal elegance, seamlessly blending the rugged charm of the cowboy lifestyle with the serene beauty of the sea. The juxtaposition of textures and elements serves as a visual metaphor for the unity of contrasting elements, mirroring the harmonious bond shared between two souls embarking on a journey of love and adventure. ”

The cake was placed on top of a whale bone that was found washed up on an east coast shoreline. Tying in the rustic South Western meats coastal vibe.

The dreamy fog left an ethereal mood dramatizing the theme. So grateful to have been part of such an epic display of talent and creation on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Could you imagine your special day here?
